A185: Crash Course in Renaissance Art

A focused discussion on the art of the Renaissance, and the cultural atmosphere that allowed for this "rebirth" of western culture. Visual aides will be provided, as participants enter close looking and conversation concerning the Italian Renaissance.

In this class we will delve into the rich and fantastical history of A Song of Ice and Fire, better known as Game of Thrones. The world in which the well known books and TV show takes place in has been expanded and fleshed out into a complete history which rivals that of J RR Tolkien's Silmarillion. Some of the topics will be covering, among other things are The ancient children of the Forest and Giants, The migration of the First Men to Westeros, The Long Night and the Othersand many more.

Teaches the Twelve Basic Principles of Animation, as described by the legendary Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston, two of Disney's Nine Old Men. Covers animation resources, free platforms, exercises, and even contests to participate in. No drawing skills required.

E181: Training for Humans: Improving Biomechanics, Improving Behaviors

Structured more as a workout, students will challenge themselves physically and mentally through improving upon the postures and movements of the body. The focus of the class will be to let go of chronic fixations and dysfunctions in order to improve your own gait cycle, throwing mechanics, and alignment. Focusing on these three pillars respects how the human body evolved to move. This makes the body much more efficient and adaptable, allowing us to better-handle both the physical and mental stressors of life. This can mitigate the consequences of modern lifestyle, such as lordosis, kyphosis, and even scoliosis of the spine. This gives clients an optimal frame with which to function. If weather permits, time outside will be spent.
This class CANNOT be registered for on site and must be registered before 11/10. Students must sign a waiver for the classroom in Gosman on the day.


Prerequisites
Students need to have an open mind. They must not be afraid to accept that everything they once believed to be certain could change. Please email me briefly outlining your athletic background, if any, and any physical things you wish to work on i.e. knee valgus, falling ankles. H202: The Art of War at the Time of Peace

One of the most renowned Chinese philosophers Sun Tzu (孙子 in Chinese Characters) created a masterpiece on War Strategy and Battle Tactics---THE ART OF WAR in the "Spring and Autumn Era" of ancient China more than 2500 years ago. Although this book talks simply about the key to military victory, the thoughts inside have now completely been regarded as wisdom of facing all kinds of challenges and creating all sorts of miracles: from entrepreneurship to political campaign, and from learning to socializing. We humans dislike war, but those wisdoms collected from this very hateful stuff helps us even better at the time when we are surrounded by peace and harmony. This class will introduce some of these amazing ideas that everyone will find useful and helpful, and will deepen the understanding of students on how differently the conflicts are treated in the ideology of Chinese culture from western culture.

The agricutural revolution for instance is very important but not that exciting to learn about...this class is a crash course in all the funner bits of history. We will be covering a wide range of topics such as Hersey in Ancient Egypt, the Early Colonization of the Americas and the most spectacular failures of European, Armies, The Loose Unholy German Confederation of microscopic states known as the Holy Roman Empire and many many more!!

The course will engage students to learn and utilize Korean social conversation, using Hangul. The course will require students to memorize certain Korean phrases during the hours, and apply them to daily situations.

H197: Linguistics| Beginner Chinese Pictographs

Chinese is one of the few languages in the world that does not have a reliable alphabet. Instead, the language is based of ancient pictographs that have been modified over the centuries to the characters we see today. Learn how to speak beginner Chinese and understand the history as to why Chinese characters are as random as they are!

M194: A Brief Intro to Java

This is a class for students with zero to very limited knowledge of programming in Java. This will be a crash course about Java and by the end of the class, students should have a brief understanding of Java, be able to know how to use terminal/powershell, and be able to code a simple straight line program.

Laptop is recommended, but not required. If you are bringing a laptop please download Sublime (https://www.sublimetext.com/3). You need this as a text editor to code. Also, Macs come with Java, but for all other OS, you need to download Java (https://java.com/en/download/).

O199: Introduction to Econometrics with R

We will cover the most basic form of Regression Analysis, called Linear Regression. We will present the theory behind this and how to implement it in R. We will consider two datasets: S&P-500 data from the NYSE (to examine Time-series data) and wage data (to examine Cross sectional data). The goals is by the end you will have some knowledge of how to use R, enough knowledge to make your own models and run tests on said models.


Prerequisites
It is recommended you bring your laptop to follow along the code as it is presented; and to run your own models at the end. In this couse, the neuroscience of hearing will be discussed. We will learn how sound travels, how it is transduced, and how the brain interprets the signals around it to form an idea of the environment. The parts of the ear and their role in balance will also be discussed.

S182: Modern 3D Printing Meets Disabilities Full!

In this course, we will talk about 3D printers and their uses today and discuss how Brandeis Prosthesis Club serves both the local and international community of children who need prosthetic arms and hands. We will give students the opportunity to build and assemble 3D printed hands so that they can go home with their own prosthetic "Raptor Hand" prototype!

S192: Evolutionary Evidence: What Fossils Can Tell Us About the Past Full!

In this course, I will be teaching about evolution and, specifically, how fossils support evolution. Some fossils are particularly interesting in that they provide evidence for the existence of transitional species; for example, an exciting fossil is Tiktaalik roseae, which is a species that appears to be between a fish and amphibian. As a whole, I will be discussing fossils and their significance as well as how fossils such as Tiktaalik provide evidence of transitional species. I hope that the students will leave having a greater appreciation and understanding of life’s history and evolutionary theory.

Together we'll go step by step and figure out what exactly causes these diseases and how they're treated. Discuss on campus lab work and classes connected to this System. Great for anyone interested in going into the STEM field.

S190: Understanding Food Labels and What they Mean to You

In our modern era and with our busy schedules we all tend to rely more and more on store bought products whether it be cereals, snacks, or ready meals. As our consumption of packaged goods increases, it's important to educate ourselves as what they contain. Food labels reveal a lot of useful information, but they are not always easy to understand and we tend to ignore them.
So the main focus of this course will be on how to understand and interpret food labels (for example things like serving size, % daily value etc..). At the end of the course we will also talk about some important dietary guidelines set by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration). Hopefully by the end of the course we will all be more educated of what we put into our bodies and why we should care.


Prerequisites
Very minimum, basic understanding of what fats, carbohydrate, and proteins are.
